The indefinite article

The indefinite article goes in front of the noun, as in English

en bog

a book

et hus

a house

Some nouns start with en; others start with et

This is because Danish nouns have gender

The indefinite article is not used when talking about profession, nationality or religion

Han er lærer

He is a teacher

Hun er franskmand

She is a Frenchman

Jeg er katolik

I am a Catholic
