Danish grammar

Main and subordinate clauses

Danish has two clause types. A main clause can stand alone and keeps the finite verb in 2nd position (verb-second or V2). A subordinate clause cannot stand alone and follows conjunctions like at, fordi, når, hvis, mens, selv om, før, efter; inside these, the verb does not move to 2nd position.
Main clauses – verb is 2nd
Peter kommer i morgen Peter is coming tomorrow
Vi spiller skak We are playing chess
De kan ikke vente They cannot wait
Hun skriver et notat nu She is writing a note now
I dag spiser vi hjemme Today we eat at home
