The letter A is one of the most versatile vowels in Danish and has a much wider range of sounds than in English. Mastering its different pronunciations is a big step toward sounding more natural.
Think of the Danish a as having two main "families": a deep, open dark a (like in father or cup) and a sharper, higher light a (like in cat or care). We'll cover each of them below.
1. The dark a (sounds made at the back of the mouth)
This is a deep, open sound similar to how an English doctor might ask you to say ah. It comes in long and short versions.
