Danish grammar

Sentence adverbs vs. verb-phrase adverbs

Sentence adverbs comment on the whole statement (måske = maybedesværre = unfortunately). Verb-phrase (VP) adverbs describe the action itself (ikke = notofte = often). The difference matters for Danish word order in main vs subordinate clauses.
Sentence adverbs express attitude, certainty, or evaluation. Common ones: måskedesværreheldigvissandsynligvisvistformentlig.
Sentence adverbs – main clauses (verb-second)
The finite verb stays 2nd. A sentence adverb can be first for emphasis or sit after the subject (middle field).
Måske tager hun bussen Maybe she takes the bus
Hun tager måske bussen She maybe takes the bus
Desværre kommer han ikke Unfortunately, he isn't coming
Han er sandsynligvis hjemme He is probably at home
Vi har heldigvis tid i morgen Luckily, we have time tomorrow
