Danish grammar

Verbs ending in s

A Danish verb can end in -s for three main reasons. Learn the difference so you don't mistake ordinary -s verbs for the passive.
1) Passive: -s on the verb
The -s passive is common in signs, headlines and instructions. It describes what happens to someone/something.
Filmen vises kl. 20 The film is shown at 8 p.m.
Biler købes og sælges Cars are bought and sold
Her ryges ikke No smoking here
Jeg vil ikke forstyrres I don't want to be disturbed
Pakken sendes i morgen The package is sent tomorrow
Form: present passive = present form + -s (laver → laves). Passive infinitive also ends in -s (at laves), especially after modals (kan lavesskal laves).
If you want to name the doer, it's often clearer to use blive-passive: Dokumentet blev sendt af Maria = The document was sent by Maria.
